On July 25, 1993 around 7:00 p.m., Martin Pedron and 22-year-old Edward Montero were at Montero’s house drinking a few beers. The two were neighbors. A disagreement over a cigarette sent tempers flaring and the men erupted into an argument. Shortly after, Pedron and three friends left Montero’s to go back to Pedron’s house. When Pedron got home, he opened the door and found Montero standing in the stairwell. Pedron produced a rifle and shot the victim three times in the chest and three times in the back. Pedron was arrested and charged with murder. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after accepting a plea bargain.

He escaped from Tillery Correctional Center in June 1996 while outside on a work assignment at Caledonia Prison Farm.
