On March 15, 1973, Jerry Jones and his cousin Roger went to a local convenient store located half a mile from where they lived in the White Oak Community of Robeson County. They frequented the store nearly every day. The store had a living quarters attached to it where the owner lived. After the store closed that night, Jerry Jones knocked on the owner’s door. When he answered, Jones pointed a gun at him, threatened to rob him and fired his weapon. Jones left the scene without any money. The store owner died two days later.
Jones was charged with first-degree murder and escaped from Robeson Correctional Center in Lumberton in 1987.
