One man was rescued and another died Friday at Harris Lake after a boat crashed into a cement pole, officials say.

Fuquay-Varina police report that Timothy Crockett Mullins, who was reported missing on Monday, was found dead. He was 47 years old.

As staff at Harris Lake County Park in southwestern Wake County looked for ways to keep visitors engaged during the pandemic last year, they dusted off an orienteering trail that an Eagle Scout created a few years ago, updated it and opened it up to the public. Today, it's become a popular spot for families to visit to gain some orienteering skills and spend some time outside.

The annual event celebrates the longleaf pine, which is native to North Carolina and other southeastern states, along with other trees and their importance.

 Orienteering, for the uninitiated, is a sport that involves finding your way through an unfamiliar area with a map and possibly a compass, which you probably have on your phone.  The activity dates back more than 100 years, according to Harris Lake's website.
