DURHAM COUNTY: On Tuesday, July 17, your tips led Durham police to Jasmond Jevon “Catfish” Rogers, 28, of 1309 Tucker Street in Durham. Rogers was taken into custody late Tuesday. Acting on a tip, officers from the Selective Enforcement Team set up outside a room at the Carolina Duke Motor Inn at 2517 Guess Road.
Authorities said Rogers came out of a room and fired at least three shots at members of the Durham Police Department's Selective Enforcement Team when they moved in on him. Investigators said Rogers tried to flee, but officers caught him when he slipped and fell in the parking lot. No one was injured, investigators said.
Police investigators charged Rogers a week ago with murder in the June 25 drive-by shooting that killed Quincy Bowens, 15, of Chapel Hill. Bowens was visiting his aunt in the Cornwallis neighborhood when someone drove by in a gold, older-model Saturn, firing shots along a two-block stretch of South Roxboro Street.
Bowens died at Duke University Hospital shortly after he was shot while standing on the porch of his aunt's apartment at 2427-B S. Roxboro St.
Family members said he pushed his 2-year-old niece into the apartment when the shooting began, but could not get out of the way himself.
"He saved my baby, basically. He pushed her in the house before he could get in," said Tina Alston, Bowen's aunt.
Police said Bowens and Rogers did not know each other.
Police said Rogers has nearly two dozen convictions since 1995, most of them drug- and assault-related. Rogers is being held in the Durham County Jail without bond. Authorities scheduled his first court appearance for 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Police said they believe Rogers went back to the same housing complex at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and wounded an unidentified person in a drive-by shooting. This time, authorities said they believe Rogers was in a burgundy-colored Nissan Altima.
Detectives also said Rogers may be connected to another shooting Tuesday in Burlington. Police said someone entered a Nissan Altima driven by Calvin Stokes at Huff's Interstate Texaco on Maple Avenue in Burlington and shot one of the car's occupants, Robert Flack, in the leg. The man then put a gun to Stokes' head and forced him to drive to Durham, investigators said.
Police said Rogers could also be connected to a fourth shooting. On July 2, authorities said Darraies McClain, 26, of 321 Melbourne Street, and his girlfriend were at a red light on Midland Terrace near Cheek Road when another vehicle pulled up and someone in the back seat fired several shots.
McClain was taken to a hospital, where he died.
