DURHAM COUNTY: Police arrested and charged Kenneth Lamont Lunsford, 21, with the Christmas Day murder of Jalil Stokes on the Durham Freeway.
Police could not confirm whether the incident was gang-related, but told NC WANTED that the crime was not random. Lunsford and Stokes knew each other, but investigators have not released any information about their relationship.
Lunsford was on probation for drug crimes when he was arrested for murder Thursday, police told NC WANTED.
At 2:14 a.m. on December 25, officers were dispatched to a traffic accident in the southbound lanes of Highway 147 near the Chapel Hill Street exit. When they arrived, they found a 1992 white Lincoln Town Car pinned against a guardrail.
Officers found a bullet hole in the car and realized that the driver – Stokes, 21, of North Elizabeth Street – had been shot. Stokes was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators have not released a motive for the crime.
