FROM WRAL:

Durham police detained a person of interest in the Eve Carson case Wednesday morning and turned him over to Chapel Hill police, who were questioning him Wednesday, sources tell WRAL.

Neither Chapel Hill police nor Durham police would comment on the matter. Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said he had been in contact with Chapel Hill police but that it was too early to comment on any possible developments in the case.

Members of the media swarmed the Chapel Hill Police Department, but it was unclear if authorities would hold a news conference about the latest developments.

Heavily armed Durham police officers took the man in custody during an overnight raid from a house on Rosedale Avenue. A neighbor said he might be the boyfriend of someone who lives on that street.

A woman who lives at the house where the man was detained said he was asked to leave the house and was not staying at the house.

FROM EARLIER REPORTS:

In the early morning hours of March 5, 2008, shots were heard and a woman was found dead near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

She had been shot multiple times in the head, according to Chapel Hill Police.

During the first 24 hours, investigators struggled to identify her. They issued a public plea for tips, describing the victim as a white female with blonde hair, approximately 18 to 25 years old, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds.

With no suspects or possible motives disclosed, officers spent Wednesday, March 5, and part of Thursday, March 6, following up on leads, knocking on doors and trying to identify the dead woman.

Police found no identification with her body, but they said a physical description and a pair of unusual tennis shoes she was wearing helped them determine who she was.

During the morning hours of Thursday, March 6, the news spread rapidly.

The victim's name had been revealed:  Eve Marie Carson.
