Body found in river identified

A body found in the Cape Fear River two weeks ago has been identified as a missing man, police said Friday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A body found in the Cape Fear River two weeks ago has been identified as a missing man, police said Friday.

The body of Livest Leon Melvin, 58, was discovered near Riverside Marina on May 8. A relative reported Melvin missing on April 10.

The body was so badly decomposed that it had to be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for identification, police said.

Detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Melvin’s death, police said.
