Family of slain UNC-Charlotte student starts crime prevention program
The family of a slain University of North Carolina at Charlotte student will use their loss to prevent other tragedies.
Posted — UpdatedIrina Yarmolenko, who is from Chapel Hill, was found dead earlier this month on the banks of the Catawba River. Police said she was asphyxiated.
Her parents and a cousin are starting a new program aimed at increasing campus safety.
"I think she would be very happy that we are trying to move forward and not dwell on the more horrible aspects of what's happened," said Natalia Deyneka, victim's cousin.
A video camera at a Goodwill store in Charlotte filmed Yarmolenko just before she was killed.
