Novelist arrested on drug charges

Best-selling novelist Kaye Gibbons was arrested Sunday on charges she fraudulently obtained painkillers, police said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Best-selling novelist Kaye Gibbons was arrested Sunday on charges she fraudulently obtained painkillers, police said.

Gibbons, whose full name is Bertha Kaye Gibbons, 48, 0f 4015 Baileyfield Drive in Raleigh, was charged with obtaining drugs by fraud and illegal possession of a Schedule 2 controlled substance. She was released from the Wake County Jail on a $5,500 bond.

Details of the charges against her weren't available Monday morning.

The author of the acclaimed novel "Ellen Foster," Gibbons has seven best-sellers to her credit.

In August, she was charged with three counts each of obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresenting herself as a physician and obtaining property by false pretense and one count of attempting to obtain a controlled substance by misrepresenting herself as a physician.
