FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Authorities arrested a Fuquay-Varina man Monday on charges he abused his 9-week-old daughter two times in May.

Michael Jairnes Lunsford, 31, of 720 Perry Howard Road, was being held in the Wake County Jail under a $50,000 bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The child suffered serious injuries on May 3 and May 13 that were consistent with shaken baby syndrome, police said. The baby is expected to survive.

Authorities charged Lunsford with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

He was previously arrested in 2004 for failure to appear for several traffic violations. In 1998, he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
