Goldsboro, N.C. — Police are investigating the death of a 6-month-old girl last week.

Diamond Smith died Friday afternoon in the pediatric intensive care unit at Pitt Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, two days after she was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital with fractured ribs and bleeding on the brain, police said.

Wayne County Social Services also is investigating the case, police said.
