Girlfriend faces charges in Roanoke Rapids slayings

Arrest warrants were issued Tuesday morning for Valerie Mayo McGee, 33, of Garysburg, on two charges each of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and accessory after the fact to armed robbery, Roanoke Rapids Deputy Police Chief Adam Bondareck said.

McGee was in the Halifax County jail Tuesday afternoon under a $250,000 bond.

Her boyfriend, Tony Maurice Gorham, 28, was arrested early Saturday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his neighbor, Maxine McCrary, 92, and her daughter, Nancy Burgess, 65, of Durham.

Investigators said both were stabbed to death late Friday in McCrary's home, at 311 U.S. Highway 158. Robbery appears to have been a motive in the slaying, investigators said, saying some items had been taken from the house.

Bondareck said that McGee was initially cooperative with investigators, but she stopped communicating with police when they discovered inconsistencies in her story.

Meanwhile, Gorham made a first court appearance on the charges Tuesday, and a judge appointed him an attorney. He was being held without bond Tuesday afternoon in the Halifax County jail.

McGee told WRAL News on Saturday that she lived with Gorham and that the two had been dating for the past 10 years.

"Honestly, the Tony that I know would not have done this," she said.
