Slain Woman from Mountains: Pregnant

BUNCOMBE COUNTY: A preliminary autopsy shows an Asheville woman who was strangled last weekend was three months pregnant.

Dimitry Simonovich is charged with first-degree murder following a court appearance Monday.

Asheville police say it was around 2 a.m. Sunday when Simonovich approached an officer standing outside the Police Department and said he had killed his wife, identified as Inna Simonovich.

Police say children were inside the apartment at the time of the incident but were not injured. Investigators believe the children of elementary school age are not the biological children of the couple.

This incident comes on the heels of a rash of murders involving pregnant women in North Carolina.   In the Raleigh-Durham area, major cases include Janet Abaroa of Durham County, and Michelle Young and Jenna Nielsen in Wake County.

A Bill  to make murdering a pregnant woman a double homicide is growing in support among a cross section of political and civic groups.
