3 homes struck by lightning in Oak Island, one a total loss

The Oak Island Fire Department responded to three homes struck by lightning on Wednesday night. Two homes had minor damage, but a home on W. Yacht Drive was a total loss.

OAK ISLAND, N.C. — Three homes were struck by lightning in Oak Island on Wednesday night and one of the homes was destroyed.

The Oak Island Fire Department responded to three homes struck by lightning after 9 p.m. Two homes had minor damage, but a home on W. Yacht Drive was a total loss.

Crews arrived to find the W. Yacht Drive home 75 percent involved in fire. The fire was contained within 45 minutes after an aggressive response with engine and ladder units. No one was inside the home at the time. None of the surrounding structures were significantly damaged, the town said.

All of the calls came in over the course of several minutes and the homes were within a seven-block radius of each other, the town said.

Multiple nearby fire departments helped with the response.
