RALEIGH, N.C. — Students at Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh are safe, police said, after reports of a person with a gun prompted a code red lockdown.

Around 10:15 a.m. on Friday, a student told the principal someone had a weapon on campus, according to police. There was also a report of a person with a firearm on the football field. The tip was just a report, and after an extensive search no gun was found on campus, according to police.

The school released students early, at 12:30 p.m., as a result of the disruption, but not before students spent 90 minutes hunkering down and hiding in the corners of classrooms while police searched for someone with a gun.
"There's no threat. There's no firearm," Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said at the press conference.

According to Raleigh police, "A systematic search of the interior and exterior of the school was completed. After the search, it was determined that no one was on the campus with a firearm." Police said it is too early to "determine if this was a hoax" or not.

The lockdown ended at 11:45 a.m. Enloe's principal released a statement, saying, "Our students and staff displayed remarkable poise. I am proud of them."

Radio traffic indicates a student was sent a photo of her boyfriend at the football field. A gun was never seen, but the person in the photo was known to carry a gun, radio traffic suggests.

According to radio traffic from Broadcastify, the boyfriend "never said he had a gun ... she just told the principal he is known to carry a gun. No gun was seen. No gun was insinuated."

Sky 5 flew over the scene during the 10:15 a.m. lockdown, where several police cars and officers could be seen outside the school.

Video sent to WRAL News shows students huddled in classrooms inside the school before the lockdown was over.

Code red lockdown at Enloe High School due to potential threat

During the lockdown, parents were asked to not come to the school, as they would not be permitted near campus until the lockdown is over.

Dozens of concerned parents still flocked to the school to get their children.

Tanisha Powell waited an hour outside her daughter's school after the campus went on code red lockdown.

"I gave her a kiss," Powell said. "Anxiety. You don’t know."

"I’m better now than in class. I was just scared, nervous, because I didn’t know what was going on," said Jazmine Gray, a sophomore.

"This is a parent's worst nightmare that I hope I never have to deal with," another parent, Xan Cohee, said.

During a code red lockdown, the building is locked and no one is allowed to enter or exit until the all-clear is given. Students will also remain inside classrooms.

Parent Nervahna Crew said she was on the phone with her son, Randall, during the entire lockdown.

"Knowing he's safe, he's of sound mind," Crew said. "When I tell you, I cannot wait to see my son."

Randall had a mutual feeling.

"I could not wait to see my mom," he said.

"Knowing my son could have been a victim to something like that or a student, that's hard and rough," Crew said.

Video sent to WRAL News from inside one of those classrooms shows an officer yank a student standing by the doorway into the hall. According to Raleigh police, the student in the video was not involved in the threat, and the department is looking into what happened.

The Raleigh Police Department's statement read in part: "We are aware of the video circulating on social media depicting an interaction between a Raleigh Police Department officer and a student during the search of the building. We hold our employees to the highest standards of conduct, even during highly tense situations. At this time, we are investigating the matter thoroughly and appropriate action will be taken for any departmental operation violations."

According to the school, there will be additional police and security presence on campus Monday out of an abundance of caution.
