'I miss him terribly': Son mourns loss of father killed in head-on collision
Scott Painter, 55, was killed in a head-on collision on Tuesday morning near the Wake and Johnston county line.
Posted — UpdatedScott Painter's family was not in court on Wednesday. Instead, they were in Wendell tending to the family farm.
“I miss him terribly,” said Stephen Painter, the son of the man killed.
“He was a very good man,” Stephen Painter said of his late father. “A very, very, very humble [man], and he’d be the guy that would help you out if you needed it.”
Police say the other driver was driving a dump truck while using a cell phone.
Victor Eldred Adrian Sumner, 41, of Garner, had a cast on his arm during Wednesday’s court appearance.
Authorities believe Sumner also had oxycodone in his system, and he admitted to using his phone.
An attorney said Wednesday in court that Sumner was watching movies on Facebook.
The court issued a $350,000 bond for Sumner, and prosecutors said more serious charges could be coming. Though he was advised against speaking, Sumner had this to say.
“Oh, God,” he said. “I [am not] ever going to be able to work.”
Stephen Painter says he has nothing to say about the crash at the moment, but he hopes Sumner hears this.
“He was my father and you took him away from me, and I miss him very much,” Stephen Painter said.
