ROXBORO, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a fatal collision between two boats that happened Sunday evening in Roxboro.

Investigators couldn't be reached for comment Monday, but a witness said four people were on a boat in the Mayo Reservoir when it hit another around 10 p.m.

The witness said one person, identified by friends as Tammy Duke, died.

Eric Justason said he was sitting on his porch when he said he heard a loud bang. He and a friend found three people on a pontoon looking for the boat owner's wife.

"It didn't take us long," Justason said. "Maybe another 30 seconds of searching, we found his wife in the water."

Justeson said the boat had been illuminated prior to the collision. He said he saw another boat pull away after impact.

Those close to the case also say the driver of the other boat surrendered to authorities.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is handling the case, but calls and e-mails were not returned Monday.
