KINSTON, N.C. — A man is dead after an altercation with Lenoir County Sheriff deputies during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Authorities say they attempted a traffic stop on 31-year-old Spencer Jackson, who they say was a suspect in a narcotics investigation.

Jackson initially stopped, but then fled in his vehicle, driving to a home on Hullwood Drive in Kinston.

Officials say he ran inside an outbuilding and came out pointing a rifle at deputies.

Two deputies fired at Jackson, who was killed in the shooting.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is on the scene investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The names of the deputies are being withheld until the SBI finishes its investigation.
