Triathlon Sunday morning honors fallen Deputy Ned Byrd

August 11 will be the one-year anniversary of the death of Deputy Ned Byrd, who was killed in the line of duty. There will be several events held that weekend in his honor.

Roll for Ned, August 12

When: 10 a.m to 2 p.m.

Where: PNC Arena, 1400 Edwards Mill Road, Raleigh, NC 27607

What: Free Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defense seminar with multiple black belt instructors who trained with Ned Byrd. This event is open to law enforcement, first responders and civilians. The event is free, but organizers are asking for donations for charity to support families of fallen officers. This event is aimed at driving interest in BJJ, especially for the LEO community.

2nd Annual Ned Byrd Memorial Triathlon, August 13

When: 9am (CrossFit workout at Iron District CrossFit), 11 a.m. (BJJ open mat at Gracie Raleigh), 2:30 p.m. (mountain biking starting at crank arm brewery)

Where: Event will start at Iron District CrossFit, 1609 Old Louisburg Rd, Raleigh, NC 27604

Deputy Ned Byrd was found dead around 1:06 a.m. on Aug. 12. Authorities found Byrd outside his parked patrol vehicle on the side of Battle Bridge Road in southeastern Wake County.

Surveillance video captured on Byrd's dashcam picked up the sound of six gunshots and shows the truck leaving the scene.

Brothers Arturo Marin-Sotelo, 29, and Alder Marin, 25, are charged with Byrd's murder.
