HARNETT COUNTY :He earned his keep traveling up and down the east coast, cleaning up storm debris. Back in 1989 when Hurrican Hugo hit the east coast, Jimmy Davis was a busy man.
The Dunn native rarely visited his family, but they knew he would stop by for three special days: his mom's birthday, Mother's Day and Christmas.
One weekend in November of 1989, Jimmy Davis stepped out of his mobile home in Dunn.
He was never seen again.
Days turned into weeks and Christmas came and went, leading Jimmy's family to fear the worst. Rumors started and false sightings were reported, leaving friends and family with several theories, but few facts.
Eighteen years passed before a strange delivery turned this missing persons case into a potential murder.
In June of 2006, a map was delivered to the Dunn Police Department, displaying the words, "This is not a joke. This is a homicide; murder." It detailed an area along I-95 and Pope Road, just outside of Dunn.
It wasn't long before a veteran on the force connected the name on the map, "Jimmy Davidic", to a missing persons case from the 80's. The name wasn't a perfect match, but agents from the State Bureau of Investigation believe the map matches the area where Jimmy once lived.
Confident they have made the connection, investigators are still left wondering who sent the map. Is it the killer trying to clear his or her conscience? Perhaps a witness trying to expose the truth? Though the author clearly states otherwise, could this map indeed be a hoax?
Regardless of the intentions, investigators are no longer looking for a missing person. They are searching for the remains of Jimmy Nelson Davis.
